Indian citizen pursuing PhD or PDF in any stream of Science and Technology (S&T), within the tenancy period of her/his research, can submit the entry. The story must relate to research being pursued by him/her.
A panel consisting of eminent science communicators and scientists, constituted by DST, would evaluate the entries.
1. The entries are open for the scholars pursuing PhD & PDF in any S&T stream from a recognized Indian University/ R&D Institute.
2. The applicant must be an Indian citizen.
3. Applicants can submit only one research story.
4. Applicants from previous years are encouraged to re-apply on fulfilling all other eligibility criteria.
5. AWSAR Winners are not eligible to submit a story in the same category.
6. AWSAR Winner in PhD category may apply a second time under the PDF category on fulfilling all other eligibility criteria.
7. Entries are also open for scholars who defended their PhDs after December 31, 2021.
As once said by great Dalai Lama “sharing your knowledge is this way to immorality”. Towards this AWSAR has taken great steps to break the scientific community bubble and made the latest research knowledge available to everyday people. This will widely increase the thinking and reasoning ability as well as applicability in the general population.
DST AWSAR program is a good initiative to provide the platform for the research scholars to showcase their creative ability. This program also helps to convey the scientific work from laboratories to the common people and helps to generate awareness regarding the recent advancement in science and scientific technologies to society.
AWSAR programme by DST, in its true sense, gave me an awsar (opportunity) to explore the artistic side in my writing and motivated me to contribute towards communicating science to the general audience.
In the lockdown, I was introduced to the DST-AWSAR where we had to write a science article keeping general public in mind about the research work we conduct inside our labs. It indeed was a great opportunity to take my research to all the people who would be reading my article and will be motivated to know more about what all is happening in the scientific world.
AWSAR is a complete hit since its inception in the year 2018. The main focus of this scheme is to hone the popular science communication skills of the researchers through both competitions and workshops. Thank you, DST and team, for putting together such an innovative platform wherein we can simplistically exemplify our research, for people to understand.
AWSAR is a fantastic initiative of DST with objective to communicate and popularise the science in mass population. It encourages young researchers to boost their scientific temper and enthusiasm towards popular science writing by conducting regular training workshops and national level competition in pan India.
AWSAR provided a platform to think outside the box and also recognizes the initiative and output of researchers by communicating their research to common man. I feel that AWSAR brings together new ideas of researchers on applied sciences and also creates a culture of science communication among the scholars.
Scientific discoveries are often found to be difficult for common people to understand because of the language, as they are not used to all scientific terms. DST has come up with an innovative idea, that not only makes people understand science but also to encourage students to nourish their writing skills, to write their research findings in common man’s language.
The main purpose of doing science is simplicity and as we understand more things, everything is becoming simpler. AWSAR is an excellent initiative by DST providing a unique opportunity to young researchers like me for translation of our scientific understanding into simplified common man’s language.
